What narrative intelligence actually means

Social listening has been around for over a decade. The tooling is mature, the dashboards are polished, and the alerts are fast. But most of it answers one question: what is being said?

That question is necessary but not sufficient. Comms teams do not fail because they lack alerts. They fail because alerts do not connect to action, and action is never measured.

Narrative intelligence is the discipline of tracking stories, not isolated signals. A narrative forms when independent voices converge on a theme. It has a lifecycle: incubating, forming, active, mutating, fading, resolved, and sometimes resurgent. It has velocity, reach, and actors who drive it forward or push back.

Monitoring tells you something was said. Narrative intelligence tells you whether it is becoming a story, whether the claims in it are true, whether your organisation should respond, and after you do, what changed.
